Family Relationships

By Kent Pinkerton The most reliable and true relationship is the one that a person has with his family. A family represents a variety of relationships that influence our lives right from birth to old age. Family relationships not only provide food and shelter but also serve as a shoulder to lean on, in case of trouble. As morals and values are generally attained through family relationships, the family plays a vital role in sustaining and preparing an individual for life in society. Strong family relationships, marked by intimacy and honesty, offer a sense of shared identity and long lasting joy and fulfillment. As it is integral to social and emotional development, parenthood or parent-child relationship is considered the core of a family. But, nowadays, it is often seen that parents work for long hours and do not have enough time to spare for their children. Little ones are usually left at home or in child care centers. By the time parents reach home, the child will be asleep. Building good relationships does not require a whole day. But, little conversations and gestures of comfort will definitely help to build a sound foundation. Among the different ways of building healthy family relationships is to schedule time for small talk with family members including the spouse, parents and children. Hugging or kissing kids when you return home after work is a great way to express your love and concern. Similarly, leaving messages when you are away from home is also effective to maintain communication. In addition, it is important to have a parent’s physical presence during children’s school activities such as school presentations, school plays, sporting events and teacher conferences. For a fulfilling family environment, it is necessary to be with them when your children or dear ones yearn for your presence. Extremely busy persons can schedule a family getaway at least once a month. Likewise, dialogue meetings around the dinner table at least once a week are healthy. This gives each member of the family an opportunity to speak out his opinions on various topics. Family reunions must also be arranged occasionally to build healthy family relationships. Relationships provides detailed information on Relationships, Online Relationships, Relationship Advice, Relationship Quiz and more. Relationships is affiliated with Interracial Couples. Feedback: Take It or Leave It … But Get It

By Nan S. Russell The expense was substantial. An immersion workshop with twelve participants sharing a common goal to hone their skills. With nervous eagerness like kindergarteners embracing school, we received input, critique, and suggestions about our work. Some of the feedback I used. Some of it I didn’t. But all of it was helpful. I haven’t always viewed feedback that way. At times in my career, I’ve taken it more like a personal indictment than a helpful gauge; an intruder I needed to defend against, rather than input I needed to evaluate. I’ve even found myself akin to a workshop colleague who said he wanted input, but when he got responses different from what he expected, he argued and debated and explained. What he wanted was praise or input he agreed with, not honest reactions. You see it’s not enough to ask for feedback. You have to be open to receive it. After three days of our colleague’s defensiveness, any willingness to offer anything but cursory input was stomped out. His argumentative actions lost him an opportunity for connection with fresh voices and new input. And we lost an opportunity to practice giving helpful feedback with authentic insights and thoughtful reflection. I learned a painful lesson about seeking feedback in my first management position. Given a large assignment, I was proud of what I produced, certain it would be received as an outstanding product. Instead I discovered my work was mediocre at best and significantly flawed because I failed to seek feedback and assessment from the end users along the way. Relying only on my own thoughts and perceptions was a big mistake. Over the years in the corporate world, I learned to view feedback as data. The more data I got, the more information I had to improve what I was working on. Realizing I was in charge of how I used that feedback data, I learned to seek it. Feedback is opinion; not fact. It’s something to evaluate; not blindly accept. But, I find when several people have the same perception, it’s good to listen. When I get insights I hadn’t thought about, it’s good to consider them. When input is mixed, it’s good to follow my instincts. But when people provide feedback with a hatchet, finding only fault rather than offering ideas for improvement, it’s good to look at it with distant curiosity. Bottom line: if you want to be winning at working you must learn to seek and offer well-intentioned feedback. I think of it like the Sicilian proverb: “Only your real friends will tell you your face is dirty.” Let input, suggestions, and feedback be real friends at work. (c) 2004 Nan S. Russell. Symptoms Of Depression - Six Steps That You Can Take To Stop Your Depression

By Joe Stevens Many people go through depression at some point in their lifetime. For some people it’s a fleeting thing that comes and goes, but for others it can be crippling. However, there are some things that you can do to help you ward off the depression “bug” and I’d like to share them with you. Here are Six things that will help you to stop depression in its tracks and help you to keep yourself together. #1. Acceptance - Don’t start beating up on yourself because you’re feeling down. I’ve battled this for years and it’s really pretty silly. The pity thoughts of “oh why do I have to feel like this? why can’t I just be like everybody else”, will only bring you down further. You must accept that you’re a human being and human beings are NOT perfect. Depression is something that you must deal with in your life. Is it a bummer sometimes? Absolutely, but it does NOT make you a bad person just because you happen to have a problem with depression. Don’t ever, ever start persecuting yourself. Got it? #2. Stop what you’re doing and visit your “Happy Place”- Have you ever seen the movie “Happy Gilmore?” If so, then you’ll immediately know what I mean, if not, let me explain. Everyone has a place or a dream of exactly where they’d most like to be. For some people this could be an island in the south pacific, for others the mountains or on a bike trail in the desert. Wherever that may be that makes you most happy and gives you peace, is your happy place. When you feel the depressed feelings coming on, stop what you’re doing right away and pay a visit there. It helps. #3. Write it down - Sometimes I feel so full of emotional garbage that I’m certain I’ll just burst open and then confetti would be everywhere (That was a joke). I’ve found relief by writing things down though. You can do this with a pen and paper, you can post to a mental health forum, you can start a blog and post there, or whatever it takes. Sometimes it helps to post to a forum if you have a problem that you really need feedback on, but it might be too sensitive to share with family or friends. Another method is to write all of that garbage that’s bugging you down on paper and then get rid of it. Trash it, burn it, flush it or tear it into a million pieces. It feels really good. #4. Call a friend - I should put an asterisk next to this one. You only want to call a trustworthy friend that you know you can confide in, that perhaps has confided in you before or has the same or similar problems as you. Don’t just grab a co-worker and say “I’ve gotta get this off my chest!” Situations like this tend to backfire and I highly recommend that you don’t do it. Stick with those close to you that are trustworthy. #5. Call a family member - Some types of depression are hereditary and someone else in your family may go through the same thing as you, with similar feelings. Don’t be afraid to pick up the phone and say “hey bro or hey sis, do you have a minute?” People that love you are suppose to be supportive. There are some things that you may be more comfortable talking to a family member about than a close friend and vice versa. #6. Exercise - I can’t recommend it enough. Exercising will help you to burn off stress and get those happy endorphins firing upstairs in your brain. The more that you do, the better that you’ll feel. Make certain to stretch very well before and after exercising in order to avoid injury and reduce soreness. This is a great help because you can get outside and really work up a good sweat. You can even get rid of some unwanted pounds while you’re at it, which will be great for your self esteem. Get off of your rear and get with the program! It helps. I hope that these tips help you to get through the “rough” times. Just remember to keep your chin up and don’t be afraid to share those feelings and get rid of them. Feel free to print this out and put it on your wall. I hope it helps you. Joe Stevens is a disabled veteran that writes articles on different topics that interest him or affect him. The Secret of How to Lose 5 Pounds in a Week

By Ian Robertson Are you losing at least one pound per week? If diet and exercise are made priorities then it should be completely feasible to lose at least a pound per week. It needs to be understood that a pound of bodyfat contains roughly 3500 calories and if one removes 500 excess calories a day then at least one pound will be lost until a goal weight is achieved. This doesnt take regular exercise into consideration which means more weight can be lost. As far as the diet is concerned, make sure you remove those 500 calories from superfluous food sources such as sodas which can be replaced with water or unsweetened tea. Thats easily 120-150 calories depending on the soda. Instead of fries or chips, go with steamed vegetables instead. Vegetables and fruit are recommended for two reasons: Not only do they have fewer calories due to the water content but they contain considerably more vitamins and minerals than the unnecessary junk. The diet facet is certainly more challenging than exercise in terms of fighting off the calories. While for most, exercise is the easier of the two, it is still a motivational challenge at times. Some days we are too busy, while other days simply leave us too tired. And while easier said than done, try not to fall into a rut like that. One of the best aspects of exercise is that it can serve as one-stop shopping in terms of calorie reduction. For instance, an hour of jogging burns up to 900 calories! However, remember to use weights as well because building muscle is what boosts the metabolism in the long-term. Alone, an hours worth of weight training will burn 500 calories but the metabolic boost you get is unique only to resistance training. Of course, one needs to remember to not only eat a nutritious protein and carbohydrate snack an hour after exercising but to eat enough calories throughout the day. Many, think starvation will lead to fat loss when exactly the opposite is true. The body must break down its own muscle tissue in an effort to maintain ones metabolism since not enough calories are being eaten. When calories are lacking, body fat is hoarded and metabolisms are slowed down in order to conserve energy due to the fight-or-flight response. Once a solid diet and exercise program has been established, removing 500 calories a day will become the healthy sidenote to an overall healthy lifestyle. Natural Anti-Depressants - St Johns Wort, Kava Kava And Lemon Balm

By Jason Ladock Depression is a much bigger and widespread problem than many would believe. It is estimated that more than 1 in 20 Americans will develop depression in the next 12 months but most sufferers attempt to hide the problem from friends, family and physicians. This makes it incredibly difficult to diagnose unless you are specifically looking for the symptoms. Most sufferers find it difficult to diagnose depression and often attribute it to “feeling a bit down”. There is a big difference between feeling down and having depression. If you or someone close to you is suffering from depression it is important to see a doctor as soon as possible. The Safe Use Of Natural Remedies As well as psychological and medical treatment there are also a number of natural remedies that can help to eliminate or, at least, reduce stress and depression. Introducing these supplements, vitamins or nutrients into your diet it can be possible to avoid prolonged depression. Always check for interactions with any prescription drug you may be taking and, if necessary, consult your physician to ask their opinion of a particular natural remedy and whether you are safe to take it. St Johns Wort St Johns Wort is one of the most popular and effective of herbs to help combat depression. It has become increasingly popular over the last few years, as more and more people have been made aware of its effectiveness. St Johns Wort inhibits monoamine oxidase, a chemical within the human body that is known to encourage depression. However, St Johns Wort does much more than this. It can help to restore self-esteem, confidence and regular sleeping patterns making it not only useful for beating depression but restoring physical health as well. It also increases appetite and restores interest in life. St Johns Wort is available in capsule, tea, tincture and oil form. There are some recorded precautions that need to be taken when considering taking St Johns Wort. Cases of photosensitivity in those with fair skin have been reported so care should be taken in the sun. You should also avoid combining St Johns Wort with cold and flu remedies as well as other prescription based anti depressants. Avoid using St Johns Wort if pregnant or breast-feeding. Kava Kava Kava Kava is another excellent product that can help to beat stress and anxiety. It is particularly effective in the battle against physical stress. Kava Kava promotes feelings of calm relaxation without the drowsiness that can be associated with prescription drugs and even other herbal remedies. Depending on the patient, feelings of euphoria and elation may also be experienced but this is experienced in the minority of cases. Lemon Balm Due to its calming aroma and effects, lemon balm is also popular as a herbal anti depressant. Lemon balm has been used for centuries as an antibacterial ointment and also as an infusion or a tea to help calm nerves and settle patients. Lemon balm can easily be grown in gardens throughout the world and by tearing the leaves, adding honey and hot water the perfect, natural relaxant can be made. A Final Word On Natural Remedies Nature produces many different herbs and more than a fare share of these can help with depression, stress and anxiety. While some care should always be taken regarding drug interactions and the misuse they are generally considered safe for regular consumption and use. If you are in any doubt then consult your physician; something you should definitely do if you are taking any form pf prescription drug. Learning to Hypnotize Someone

By Michael Russell Learning to hypnotize someone is not as difficult as it might at first seem. You can learn hypnosis in as little as a couple days provided you approach it properly and have a willing subject. You have to believe in what you are doing and be able to focus on the hypnosis very intently. If you are distracted even slightly then the person you are trying to hypnotize will be distracted as well. You would need to start all over again. Your subject also has to work with you on the hypnosis. If they don’t want to be hypnotized or don’t know what you are doing then it probably won’t work. Someone who is hypnotized is fully aware of everything that happens during hypnosis. They do not go to sleep or become unconscious in fact quite the opposite is true. It is a hyper aware state that allows access to deeper levels of consciousness. This trance state has several key bodily signs. The person is relaxed, facial muscles relaxed to the point of being slack, shoulders are slumped, breathing is slow and rhythmic. The subjects eyes will not really be focused on anything just sort of a deep distant stare. Your body language should almost parallel theirs to gain trust and reinforce the depth of their trance. So how do you get your subject into this trance? As I said earlier, you can learn to do it fairly quickly but it takes developed experience before you can get the person into a deep trance. It is very much like having a good conversation with someone. It seems like a natural and easy thing when you have a really good conversation with someone but the truth is it draws on your entire life experience and all of your extensively developed vocabulary, body language, tone of voice and almost everything that makes up who you are. Hypnosis is a very special type of good conversation. The methods and techniques for hypnosis are as varied as human conversation and you can’t script it in advance. One of the techniques is very straightforward. Simply ask the person to produce the body language signs of trance noted above. Have them do it one step at a time and reinforce them by telling them they are doing a good job. Say “good” or “great” or “wonderful” or similar positive reinforcing words. After doing this on 2 or 3 separate occasions your subject will start getting into a trance state more easily. Another technique is to say 3 or 4 obviously true facts in a sentence followed by a fifth thing that you want to accomplish with the hypnosis. If you say 3 or 4 things that are obviously true the person is very likely to also accept the fifth thing as true too. Something like, “As you sit in your chair, feel yourself breathing, hear the sounds around you, let yourself relax deeply”. After doing this for several minutes, the trance state in your subject deepens and you can start being more direct about what you want to accomplish. There are a multitude of other similar techniques but I think you get the idea how it works. Not everyone can hypnotize people but with practice and training miraculous things can be accomplished with hypnosis. Michael Russell Your Independent guide to Hypnosis.
